Many people head to a sauna when they wish to relax and recharge. This small, heated space provides several benefits above and beyond soothing a person. In fact, personal trainers often recommend people visit a sauna after a good workout.

Over the years, saunas have evolved. Today, many people use an infrared sauna, as the body sweats at lower temperatures. This means people can handle the heat better. The IR penetrates up to three inches, so a visit to the sauna lead to fat burning and detoxification. For more information on how this works, visit cleverleverage.com. However, there are certain things a person should know before using an infrared sauna.

Never Consume Alcohol Before Using the Sauna

Alcohol dehydrates the body, much as the sauna does. Combining the two is never a wise move, as many health problems may arise. A person could find their blood pressure drops when they drink alcohol and then visit the sauna.

Some people find they are lightheaded when they combine the two, which could lead to a fall and injuries. Heat stroke and cardiac arrhythmia have also been reported by individuals who used a sauna after drinking alcohol. Drink water instead to avoid these issues.

    Dress Appropriately

People often wear a towel when visiting the sauna. However, other clothing options are available. The key is to wear as little as possible, as this allows for the most benefits.

Choose loose clothing that breathes or put on a swimsuit. Choose light colored items, as dark clothing blocks the light from the sauna.

In addition, remove any jewelry and makeup. Makeup can clog the pores and prevent the skin from breathing freely. This doesn’t even take into account the fact that the makeup will melt and run down the face, leaving behind an unattractive mess.

    Leave the Smartphone Behind

While it may seem like a great time to catch up on a favorite TV show, leave the smartphone outside the sauna. The heat and light from the sauna will harm the hardware.

Certain professional spas now have special devices that allow clients to watch TV while partaking in a session. They have invested in special equipment to offer this luxury. The average sauna user doesn’t have this equipment, so leave the phone behind and enjoy a digital detox.

Shower Before and After a Sauna Visit

Showering before a sauna visit is wise, as any dirt and the oily film on the body interfere with the body’s ability to absorb the heat and light. A shower is also needed after a sauna to wash any toxins and sweat away.

    Talk With a Doctor

Every person should speak to their doctor before using a sauna. This ensures there are no health conditions that could make the use of a sauna dangerous.

For example, pregnant women and those with heart conditions should not use a sauna. The same holds for those who take some medications, as the medication could amplify the effects of the sauna, making it dangerous for the individual.

Saunas offer countless benefits. However, a person must use the sauna properly to ensure they receive these benefits and don’t harm themselves in the process. By following these tips, a person reduces the risk of any ill effects.
