Whether you have just moved to a new house or want to upgrade your cleaning kit, we have put together a list of the most essential household cleaning tools & equipment that you should buy at the earliest.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money on these tools. Except for a few, most items in the following list of essential house cleaning tools & equipment can be purchased at one go. You can easily find them online or at a local store.

    Table of Contents

    • #1) Broom, Dustpan & Mop
    • #2) Vacuum Cleaner
    • #3) Microfiber Cloths
    • #4) Lint Roller
    • #5) Sponge
    • #6) White Towels
    • #7) Squeegee
    • #8) Scrub Brush
    • #9) Household Plunger
    • #10) Extension Dusting Kit
    • #11) Spray Bottle

    #1) Broom, Dustpan & Mop

First things first, you need a set of ‘broom, dustpan and mop’ for daily household cleaning. Having them in your household cleaning kit is important especially if hard surfaces such as tile, wood, cork, or linoleum require regular cleaning. With a broom, dustpan, and mop, you can clean most surfaces efficiently and on time.

With a quick, daily sweep, you can get rid of dirt, hair, pet litter, and other unpleasant stuff lying around your house. Get a broom with angled bristles; such a broom can easily reach into corners. When it comes to the dustpan, consider investing in a variant with a long handle so that you don’t have to bend over too often to hold it in place.

    #2) Vacuum Cleaner

Vacuum cleaners available these days are easy to use. Equipped with filters and suction motors, vacuum cleaners are effective at removing dust and allergens. They help save both time and energy.

If you want a vacuum cleaner for small cleaning tasks, consider investing in a compact, hand-held one. Make sure the hand-held vacuum cleaner you order is bundled with attachments for removing dust from hard to reach areas, such as behind the appliances or under the furniture.

For cleaning large floors, furniture, etc., canister vacuum cleaners with customizable settings and high-power suction are ideal. They are more powerful in comparison to hand-held variants. These cleaning devices also come with blower ports. So, you can easily blow away small debris that accumulates over time in different parts of your home.

Vertical vacuum cleaners are also great for cleaning carpets and floors. If you are looking for a more hygienic option in household cleaning equipment, consider investing in a vertical vacuum cleaner.

In case there are no budget constraints, you can also get a robot vacuum cleaner. With built-in sensors, lasers, and cameras, these devices work around your dwelling to keep it clean. Such devices can generally be controlled with the help of a mobile app. So, you can schedule floor cleaning cycles at any time from any location.

A vacuum cleaner will last several years. So, it’s advisable to invest in a good model even if it means spending more money on it.

    #3) Microfiber Cloths

Compared to feather dusters, microfiber cloths hold on to dust quite effortlessly. Homeowners love to use microfiber cloths for cleaning because they can pick the tiniest pieces of dirt.

They work well when you need to –

    • Clean counters
    • Clean appliances
    •  Polish glass or tiles
    • Remove pet hair

With microfiber, you can clean different surfaces with a little water. Microfiber is gentle to different surfaces and won’t leave any streaks or cause any scratches.  Microfiber cloths for household cleaning are available in different colors. So, you can buy one for color for the kitchen, another for the bathroom and the third for other living areas inside your house.

    #4) Lint Roller

Do you have a pet dog or cat? If so, you may want to get a lint roller. It is great for removing pet hair from clothing, upholstery, carpets, etc.

    It is also great for

    • Removing dust from upholstery
    • Sweeping crumbs
    • Picking up tiny chunks of broken glass

    #5) Sponge

Sponges come handy when you need to clean something abrasive on a surface. Avoid-cheap, low quality spongers. If you want a sponge to last several years, consider investing in a heavy-duty variant.

    #6) White Towels

Like microfiber cloths and sponges discussed above, white towels are also among the essential household cleaning supplies. White towels nearly match with everything. You can disinfect them when they are dirty and not worry about them losing color. White towels are great for removing smudges on your carpet, upholstery, mattress, etc.

    #7) Squeegee

This is a small yet very important cleaning tool. If you want to prevent mold growth in your showers, be sure to use squeegee to remove excess moisture from the mirrors and windows. Over time, mold can grow in different parts of your home and require professional mold removal.

A damp squeegee can also be used to remove pet hair from furniture. Do remember to replace a squeegee when it begins to leave streaks.

    #8) Scrub Brush

The list of things a scrub brush can do in a household is endless. Scrub brush works where a piece of cloth, white towel, or a sponge isn’t useful.

Most people use scrub brushes to clean tough stains from garage floors, cement patios, car mats, etc. But, you can also use it to scour grouts or wipe clean garbage cans, fireplace walls, garden tools, flower pots, etc. So, it is a good idea to invest in an all-purpose scrub brush for household cleaning.

    #9) Household Plunger

Household plungers have rubber suction cups attached to sticks made of wood or plastic. A plunger can be used to unclog kitchen or bathroom drains. It works by forcing air into the drain, followed by the creation of a vacuum that forces everything out.

Plungers can help you keep your drains in good shape. Over time, drain clogs keep on getting bigger and may require professional drain cleaning at some point. When you have a plunger available, you can quickly resolve minor choking issues in your kitchen basin, bathroom sinks, and tubs.

It is advisable to avoid using harsh chemical drain cleaners. It’s alright to use them occasionally during an emergency but keep in mind that harsh chemicals can corrode the inner lining of your drain pipes.

    #10) Extension Dusting Kit

Dusting walls and ceilings is often time-consuming. People have a hard time doing it unless they are very tall. With an extension dusting kit, you don’t need to move around the house with a step-stool to dust off the ceilings or walls. You can also use it to clean light fixtures, chandeliers, and the top of kitchen cabinets. When you are done, you just need to rinse it in the bathroom sink or shake it in your backyard to get rid of the dust.

    #11) Spray Bottle

Spray bottles come handy when you need to clean high places. You can also use a spray bottle to quickly sprinkle water or detergent to wipe a stain on the kitchen counter or clear a spill on the dining table.

Most people use spray bottles to evenly spread a cleaning solution over the target area. This way, you can optimize the use of a cleaning solution. You can also store homemade cleaners in a spray bottle.
