What You Should Include in Your Semi’s Pre-Trip Inspection

Before each time you drive your semitruck, it’s a good idea to conduct a pre-trip inspection. This check will ensure that everything in your truck is working safely and correctly—or alert you if something needs your attention before your run. Discover what you should include in your semi’s pre-trip inspection.

    Table of Contents

    • Adjust Your Mirrors
    • Check Your Fluid Levels
    • Inspect Your Wheels
    • Test Your Lights

    Adjust Your Mirrors

During a pre-trip inspection, examine your mirrors. If they seem out of place, you’ll need to know how to properly position your truck’s mirrors to allow you the best visibility and then adjust them accordingly. With the mirrors in their proper positions, you’ll be able to see clearly around your vehicle and drive safely.

    Check Your Fluid Levels

Before you drive your semitruck, remember to check all your fluid levels, including your coolant, brake fluid, oil, and windshield wiper fluid. If you notice that any of these fluids are low, refill them before you drive to ensure that your vehicle runs smoothly.

    Inspect Your Wheels

You never know when a nail or a sharp piece of glass will damage your semi’s tires. During your pre-trip inspections, examine your semitruck’s tires for cuts, tears, abrasions, or embedded objects. If you notice any issues, be sure to fix or replace your tire before you start your route.

    Test Your Lights

To drive your semi safely at night, you’ll need to use your lights. Test all your lights—including headlight, brake lights, high beams, and turn signals—by turning them on and off. This process is easiest if you have someone helping you. After you test all your lights, you’ll be ready to drive safely at night.

And those are just a few things you should include in your semi’s pre-trip inspection. To recap, you’ll need to adjust your mirrors, check your fluid levels, inspect your wheels, and test your lights before you head out to the road. After you conduct a pre-trip inspection, you’ll feel more confident driving your vehicle safely to your next destination.
